Dental Implants

Is your ability to eat and speak impacted by missing teeth? Dental implants paired with a custom restoration like a crown, bridge, or denture can improve your dental health and quality of life. Learn how Dr. Mark Davis in Scottsdale, AZ, partners with local implant specialists to restore the function and appearance of your smile.

What Are Implants?

Dental implants are titanium or zirconia posts that are surgically placed directly into the jaw to replace tooth roots. These restorative dentistry treatments return function to your smile, allowing you to eat and speak properly and smile with confidence.

Understanding Jawbone Atrophy

When a patient loses a tooth, the jawbone no longer has the stimulation the tooth root once provided. Without that stimulation, the jawbone begins to deteriorate. Zirconia and titanium implants are the only dental solution that can stop this jawbone atrophy. They act as prosthetic tooth roots, stimulating the jawbone. Dental implants also provide stability for your restorations so they look and feel like natural teeth.

A Closer Look at Implants

Dental implants are screw-like, titanium posts that are surgically placed directly into the jawbone, supporting restorations and providing much-needed stimulation to prevent or stop bone atrophy.

Missing Teeth? You're Not Alone.

It is estimated that 178 million Americans are missing at least one tooth and about 40 million Americans are missing all of their teeth.

Implant-Supported Restorations to Fit Your Needs

Dental Crowns

A crown is an artificial tooth that is crafted and shade-matched to look just like a natural tooth. An implant-supported crown is often the best dental solution when a patient is only missing a single tooth.

Dental Bridges

Dental bridges are comprised of crowns that have been cemented together. Implant-supported bridges are held in place on either side by dental implants. This restoration fills in the gap caused by up to three consecutive missing teeth.

Dentures

If you are missing an entire arch of teeth, dentures supported by implants may be a good fit for you. Implant-supported dentures do not require messy adhesives, and instead are secured in place by implants for improved stability. Our Scottsdale office also offers All-on-4® dental implants that can support a denture for patients who may not qualify for traditional options due to jawbone atrophy.

All-on-4 Dental Implants

Not every patient is an immediate candidate for dental implants. Many need to first undergo a bone graft to combat the effects of jawbone atrophy. However, if you have lost most or all the teeth along a dental arch and have experienced some degree of bone loss, you may still qualify for All-on-4® dental implants. This method uses four implants to support a full denture. The two posterior implants are placed at a 45-degree angle for optimal contact with the jaw. This can help you avoid the need for a bone graft and expedite your treatment timeline.

Dental implants anchor dentures directly to the jaw
At Davis Dentistry in Scottsdale, AZ, we can craft implant-supported dentures to restore your oral function. Implant-supported dentures anchor directly to the jawbone for maximum stability, so you do not have to worry about your dentures slipping when you eat or speak.

Dental Implant Process

Though patients' needs vary, the general timeline for receiving dental implants may contain these steps:

Dental implants and restorations restore function to your smile, allowing you to eat and speak properly and smile with confidence.
Dental implants and restorations restore function to your smile, allowing you to eat and speak properly and smile with confidence.

Initial Consultation

During your initial consultation in Scottsdale, AZ, Dr. Davis will examine your mouth and discuss your oral health history as well as your dental goals. He will also determine if you need preparatory procedures such as extractions or periodontal treatment to address gum disease before implant placement. He will then refer you to a trusted local oral surgeon for implant placement.

Implant Placement

During placement, your dental implants are inserted directly into the jawbone. You will then need time to heal and allow the implants to fuse to the bone in a process called osseointegration, which can take about three to six months.

Impressions

Dr. Davis will take impressions of your teeth to craft a custom restoration that's comfortable and blends in seamlessly with the surrounding natural teeth. At our Scottsdale dental practice, we use digital impressions, eliminating the need for messy putty impressions. These impressions are then sent to our lab where your crown, bridge, or denture is crafted.

Restoration

After about three to four weeks, your crown, bridge, or denture will arrive back at our office. Dr. Davis will place your restoration and make any needed adjustments to ensure proper function and comfort.
